Al Towaber, De Asis impress in Funland Ramadan bowling

Ziad Al Towaber from Saudi Arabia and Dexter De Asis from the Philippines scored the high series on day 24 of qualifying in the Funland Ramadan Bowling Tournament 2022, currently being played at Funland Centre’s lanes. The action continued to heat up as qualification heads into its concluding day tomorrow.

Al Towaber was among the top-performing competitors with a score of 740 pins to lead all bowlers in Group A for the day, while De Asis had a 667 series to top participants in Group B. Competitors in the tournament are divided into two groups, with Group A for advanced bowlers and Group B for beginners and ladies.

Contestants from both groups in this first phase attempt trials as much as they need, with the total pinfalls including handicap for their best three trials being considered. Each trial is composed of three games. Al Towareb’s 740 score was his best of the tournament to date and it added to his other top marks of 688 and 644.

That brought his total to 2,072 pins from his three best trials for a 230.2 average, earning him 12th place on the Group A standings. The top eight remained unchanged. Emerson Gotencio from the Philippines was still in the lead with his 2,283 total and 253.7 average, closely followed by Bahraini talent Abdulla Abdulkarim with a 2,265 total and 251.7 average.

His countryman and national team star Yousef Falah remained third with his 2,217 total and 246.3 average, while Abdulrahman Al Kheliwi from Saudi Arabia was fourth with a 2,207 total and 245.2 average. Fellow-Saudi Prince Mohammed bin Sultan bin Saud bin Abdulaziz Al Saud was fifth on marks of 2,144 and 238.2, and sixth through eighth, respectively, were Ahmed Al Khaja (2,132, 236.9), Ahmed Al Goud (2,129, 236.6) and Ahmed Fareed (2,119, 235.4).

Meanwhile, De Asis’s 667 series was his second-best of the competition, and it propelled him to the number one spot in Group B. His score added to his other two top trials of 723 and 629, bringing his average total to 2,019 for a 224.3 average.

De Asis is now ahead of Khalid Sameer and fellow-Filipino bowler Euly Salcedo, who share a 2,005 total score and 222.8 average. Sami Saloom climbed to fourth with a 1,975 total and 219.4 average, followed by Ahmed Al Ansari in fifth with a 1,964 total and 218.2 average. The Group B top eight was rounded off by Isa Akbari (1,933, 214.8), Ronald Seralvo (1,893, 210.3) from the Philippines and Mohammed Daraj (1,873, 208.1).

At the end of the qualifying tomorrow, bowlers ranked first and second from Groups A and B will advance directly to round three, while bowlers ranked third to 16th from each group will play in round two. The Funland Ramadan Bowling Tournament 2022 is being held in memory of the Late Murtadha Qudrat Rasti, the Late Shaikh Ebrahim bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, and the Late Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Khalifa. Nearly BD4,000 in prize money will be on offer to Group A contender Ziad Al Towaber in action during qualifying the top 16 finishers.
