Bahrain continue to strike gold!

Bahrain continued their dominant run in the women’s and men’s athletics competitions last night at the third GCC Games in Kuwait by winning 10 more medals, including four gold.

The gold medals were claimed by Winfred Yavi in the women’s 3,000 metres steeplechase, Aminat Jamal in the women’s 400m hurdles, Tigest Mekonen in the women’s 800m and John Koech in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase.

Bahrain should have also claimed a fifth gold medal following Fatima Mubarak’s victory in the women’s triple jump. But she was later disqualified following a protest against her for arriving late, according to a Bahrain team official.

The dispute was accepted and Fatima lost her gold. To add to their four gold medals, the Bahrainis also claimed five silver medals and one bronze medal yesterday. The silver medals were clinched by Noora Jasim in the women’s discus throw, Saleha Lahdan in the women’s 400m hurdles, Ruth Jebet in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase, Bahrain’s women’s relay team in the 4x100m and Evans Chematot in the men’s 3,000m steeplechase.

The bronze medal was claimed by Bahrain’s men’s relay team in their 4x100m event. The Bahrainis’ 10 gold medals on the second day of the track and field events in Kuwait brought their overall medal tally so far to 23, having already won 13 medals on day one on Monday.

Their 23-medal haul includes 11 gold medals, eight silver and four bronze medals.

In yesterday’s events , Winfred won her women’s 3,000m steeplechase title after completing the race in an impressive time of nine minutes 23.11 seconds.

It was a fine finish for the world-class athlete, who was one of the favorites heading into the event. She was able to finish ahead of Rio Olympics champion Ruth Jebet, who took the silver medal in 9:41.72. The Bahraini pair were in a class of their own in the race, as Dana Alzanki of Kuwait finished a distant third in 16:46.33.

In the women’s 400m hurdles, Aminat won in an impressive time of 58.55 seconds, to cap - ture her second gold medal of these GCC Games. She had also earlier clinched the gold in the women’s 100m hurdles.

Saleha won the silver medal in the race in 1:06.86. In the women’s 800m final, Tigest took first place in 2:11.25, completing the two-lap distance well ahead of runner-up Amal Alroumi of Kuwait who finished in 2:19.27.

The fourth gold medal yesterday was claimed by Koech, who finished his men’s 3,000m steeplechase final in 8:46.97. Koech was followed by fellow-Bahraini Chematot, who took one of the national team’s five silver medals yesterday in 8:53.42.

Noora was among the other silver-medallists, finishing the women’s discus throw final round with a best effort of 38.82m. She was narrowly defeated by Fatima Alhosani of the UAE, who claimed the gold in 40.98m.

The fifth silver medal of the day was won by Bahrain’s women’s relay team in the 4x100m final. The team consisted of Hajar Alkhaldi, Iman Essa, Zenab Mahamat and Fatima Mubarak, and they completed the race in 50.68s, narrowly behind gold-medallists Kuwait who won in 49.12s.

The UAE took the bronze in 52.25s. Bahrain’s men’s relay team captured the 4x100m bronze with a time of 39.73s. Saudi Arabia won in 39.06, while Oman came second in 39.72. Today will be the final day of the women’s and men’s athletics competitions at the GCC Games, and Bahrain’s athletes will look to wrap up their medal bids on a positive note.
