Bahrain added a 57th medal yesterday at the third GCC Games in Kuwait after the women’s basketball team clinched the bronze medal in the 3x3 basketball tournament. The Bahrainis featured Hissa Aljaber, Bayan Salman, Seema Hasan and Aysha Alhadi. They secured their place on the podium following a narrow 10-9 victory over Saudi Arabia in the bronze medal match. Hissa was their leading scorer in the contest, finishing with four points, while Seema added three and Aysha had two.
Bayan scored one point in the Bahrainis’ win. For the Saudis, Aljawharah Mohammed was their leading scorer with a game-high six points. The nationals had qualified for the game for third place after losing in the semi-finals to Kuwait, 10-14.
That contest was held earlier in the day. Also yesterday, they wrapped up their preliminary round campaign with an 8-14 defeat to the Kuwaitis. They thus ended the first stage with three wins and two losses. Winning the gold medals were the UAE, who beat hosts Kuwait 12-8 in the final. Bahrain’s bronze medal brought their overall tally to the third GCC Games to 57 as the event heads into its final two days of competition today and tomorrow.
The nationals have 20 gold, 21 silver and 16 bronze, which put them in second place on the six-nation medal table. Kuwait continue to lead, while the UAE are third, Qatar fourth, Oman fifth and Saudi sixth. Meanwhile, Bahrain outclassed Saudi 35-27 last night in the men’s handball tournament. The Bahrainis powered to an early lead and never looked back, going ahead by double-digit goals midway through the second half en route to the convincing win.
It was the third straight triumph of the competition for the nationals, who are hoping to come away with the men’s handball gold medals. Today is a rest day but that will be decided tomorrow when they take on Qatar in their final fixture of this league-type tournament. Bahrain will face off with their Qatari rivals at 7pm. In last night’s match, the Bahrainis, coached by Ameen Alqallaf, took a commanding 19-12 advantage at the half and didn’t let up decide the big lead. Ali Eid finished as Bahrain’s top scorer with seven goals, while Mohamed Mohamed added six and Ahmed Almaqabi contributed five.
Qasim Qambar fired in four goals, as did Mahdi Habib, while Hasan Ali scored three, Abdulla Alzaimoor had two and Mahmood Mohamed, Ahmed Fadhul, Mohamed Ahmed and Jasim Khamis all finished with a goal apiece. Bahrain goalkeeper Hashem Isa made nine saves for the nationals.
