Bahrain’s Abdi Ali Gelelchu claimed an impressive silver-medal finish in the men’s race of the Ottawa International Marathon, held in Canada. The meeting was an Elite-level event under the banner of World Athletics Label Road Races. Competing against a high-quality field of internationally renowned distance-running specialists, Gelelchu put in a strong performance to secure his place on the podium.

He completed the 42.2-kilometre distance in two hours nine minutes 24 seconds. His mark was marginally slower than his personal and season best in the marathon, which is 2:07:15, which the 24-year-old set in Sevilla, Spain in February of this year.

Andualem Belay Shiferaw from Ethiopia was the winner in 2:06:04, while Yuta Shimoda from Japan came third in 2:09:50. Another Bahraini, Abdi Ibrahim Abdo, was also competing in the race. He finished 23rd overall in 3:13:53. Abdo’s mark was far from his season’s best of 2:11:11, which he set in Houston, Texas in January; and well off his personal best of 2:08:32, which he clocked in Rome in 2018.
