Najma outclass Mudhar in Gulf handball opener

Bahrain champions Al Najma made a rousing start to their campaign in the 38th Gulf Clubs Men’s Handball Championship last night with a 33-26 victory over Mudhar of Saudi Arabia.

The Bahrainis took a narrow 17-13 advantage into the half and never wavered the rest of the way.

Mahdi Saad was named the Best Player of the Game following the contest. The match was the first of two for Najma in Group B of the competition’s preliminary round.

They next play Al Salmiya of host nation Kuwait today. Group A comprises Al Kuwait SC, Muscat from Oman, Al Jazeera from the UAE and Al Ahly from Qatar.

The top two teams at the end of a single round-robin will march through to the semi-finals. Also playing key roles for Najma last night were long-time Bahrain national team captain Hussain Al Sayyad, the French international pairing of brothers Olivier Nyokas and Alix Kevynn Nyokas, goalkeeper Mohammed Abdulhussain, Hassan Shehab, Bilal Basham, Mahdi Saad, Komail Mahfoodh and Mohammed Mirza, to name a few.
