Winfred Yavi and Edidiong Odiong get Bahrain’s campaign underway tomorrow at the World Athletics Championships 2022 in Eugene, Oregon, in the US. Winfred and Edidiong will both be competing in their respective first round heats as part of the meeting’s second day of action.

The worlds begin today but no Bahrainis are scheduled to take to the track. Tomorrow, Winfred will be running in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase heats starting at 8.35pm, Bahrain time. Edidiong will then compete in the women’s 100m heats set for 3.10am early on Sunday morning, Bahrain time.

Should Winfred make it through to the next round, she will run in her final to go for gold early on Thursday morning. Edidiong, on the other hand, will compete in her semi-final on Monday, should she go through, to be followed by the medal round the same day.

Meanwhile, Edidiong is also scheduled to compete in the women’s 200m, which gets underway with the heats on Tuesday. If she advances, her semi-final will be on Wednesday, followed by the final early Friday morning, Bahrain time. Bahrain’s Shumi Dechasa will have the first chance to go for gold when he competes in the men’s marathon on Sunday, scheduled for a 4.15pm start, Bahrain time.

Bahrain’s fourth athlete at the worlds, Aminat Jamal, will begin her campaign in the women’s 400m hurdles with the heats on Wednesday, with the semi-final set for Thursday and the final on Saturday, Bahrain time. Bahrain’s athletes will be among around 2,000 competitors from nearly 200 countries at the 10-day meeting.

The national team delegation at the event is headed by Bahrain Athletics Association (BAA) secretary general Yousef Ahmed and it includes national teams director Mohammed Abdulaziz. According to the BAA, Oregon will mark the eighth world championships that Bahrain are competing in.
