The Bahrain Super Cup will launch the national basketball season in early September, it has been announced. The Bahrain Basketball Association (BBA) issued the official calendar of competitions for the 2022/2023 campaign.

It tips off with the Bahrain Super Cup on September 8 between defending Zain Bahrain Basketball League champions Manama and Khalifa bin Salman Cup holders Al Ahli, who were last year’s Super Cup winners.

The single-game affair is the traditional curtain-raiser to the local season. Following that game, the Zain Bahrain Basketball League will then begin on September 13. It is scheduled to be held over two rounds and continue until March 21 of next year.

After this double round-robin preliminary stage featuring 11 teams in all, the top two will qualify directly for the Golden Square semi-finals, while the third through sixth-placed clubs will compete in a play-off for the other two semis berths.

The Golden Square will be held in best-of-three format, to be followed by the championship round, which will be played in best-of-five format. The Khalifa bin Salman Cup 2023 will get underway on March 25 of next year with the preliminary round and quarter-final games.

The knockout competition will then head into the best-of-three semi-finals, and then a single-game title match. Meanwhile, the BBA also announced that the annual BBA Cup has been renamed as the Late Shaikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa Cup, in honour of the former BBA president.
