Bahrain’s jiu-jitsu star Ali Monfaradi yesterday secured a silver medal in the Men’s 77kg Ne-Waza category in the jiu-jitsu competition at the World Games 2022, bein held in Birmingham, Alabama, in the US. Monfaradi finished as runner-up after losing to Nimrod Ryeder from Israel 0-3 in the gold medal match.

His silver is the lone medal so far for Bahrain at the multi-sport event, which currently places them in tied-60th on the medal table. Earlier in the competition, Monfaradi had two matches in Pool A of the preliminary round. He won against Canadian Michael Sheehan but then lost to Emirati Mohamed Alamri.

That still earned him a place in the semi-finals, where he beat Jim Edmund from the US to book a berth in the final. Sheehan took the bronze medal after beating Edmund 14-0 in the match for third place. Monfaradi’s silver medal adds to his already many accolades in jiu-jitsu at all levels of the sport. He is one of three Bahrainis competing at the World Games 2022.

The others are duathlon athlete Moussa Karich and snooker player Habib Sabah. Karich was scheduled to compete early today morning, Bahrain time, in the Men’s Individual category of the duathlon event. Sabah has already participated, losing his Round of 16 match in the Men’s Snooker competition to Umut Dikme of Germany 0-3.

This year’s World Games marks the 11th edition of the international multi-sport meeting, which is meant for sports, or disciplines or events within a sport, that were not contested at the Olympic Games. A total of 110 nations from around the globe are participating with around 3,600 athletes. The closing ceremony is scheduled to be held early tomorrow morning, Bahrain time.
