Bahrain is set to compete in six sports at the upcoming fifth Islamic Solidarity Games, which will be held next month in the city of Konya in Turkey.
The Kingdom’s top athletes will be flying the Bahrain flag in athletics, shooting, judo, cycling, wrestling and weightlifting. Bahrain is expected to be one of 55 participating nations with around 6,000 athletes competing across 19 sports.
Bahrain will be looking to add to its impressive medal haul from past editions of the Games. National athletes had won 28 medals in the multi-sport event, which had taken place in 2005, 2010, 2013 and 2017.
The Bahrainis claimed 14 gold medals, six silver and eight bronze medals in all. The Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) board reviewed the participation in the Games during its second meeting of the current electoral cycle, held at Al Wadi Palace in Riffa.
It was chaired by Supreme Council for Youth and Sports first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority president and BOC chief His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa. BOC secretary general Faris Al Kooheji was also in attendance.
During the meeting, the board also reviewed plans for Bahrain to focus on individual sports for the Kingdom’s participation at the next Olympic Games in Paris in 2004. The plan aims to support teams to obtain qualification for sports such as athletics, wrestling, judo, boxing, taekwondo, cycling and other disciplines. Several other issues were discussed during the meeting.
