Bahrain’s women’s volleyball team were crowned champions of the first Fatima bint Mubarak Academy GCC Volleyball Cup for Ladies, held in Abu Dhabi with six teams from across the region participating.

The Bahrainis clinched the title after defeating Sharjah Women’s Sports team 3-0 (25- 13, 25-17, 25-13) in the tournament final. The result wrapped up their undefeated campaign in the competition, which included four wins en route to securing the crown.

Bahrain’s Muneera Abdullah Salem was quoted as saying: “It’s a feeling that I cannot describe. Although it wasn’t the first time that we have won a tournament this victory feels different because we are a team with a mix of youth and experienced players so it’s a joy to emerge champions in this GCC event. This is a huge honour and a big achievement and everyone played their part.”

Muneera was one of two Bahrainis who came away with individual awards at the end of the tournament. She won the Best Attacker honour, while teammate Marwa Majeed Momin claimed the Best Setter award.

The four other participating teams were the Fatima bint Mubarak Ladies Sports Academy and Al Wasl, also from the UAE; Salwa Al Sabah from Kuwait and Saudi Noura Club from Saudi Arabia. Al Wasl took home the tournament’s bronze medals.
