Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi claimed an impressive runner-up finish in the women’s 3,000 metres steeplechase last night at the Memorial van Damme Diamond League meeting, held in Brussels, Belgium.
Competing amongst a 15-runner field that included the world’s best steeplechasers, Winfred completed the race in nine minutes 03.44 seconds—finishing narrowly behind winner Jackline Chepkoech of Kenya, who won in 9:02.43.
Werkuha Getachew of Ethiopia came third in 9:08.03. The race was the first for Winfred on the international stage since her appearance for Bahrain in the fifth Islamic Solidarity Games in Konya, Turkey, where she also won a steeplechase gold medal.
Her time, however, was far from her quickest mark of the season of 8:56.55, which she clocked in Paris in June en route to a victory. That time is the fourth-fastest in the world this year. Winfred was the only Bahraini competing last night in Brussels.
