Bahrain’s youth national football team bowed to Oman 0-2 last night in their third match of the Group C qualifiers for the 2023 AFC U-17 Asian Cup, currently being held in Muscat.

The Omanis scored on either side of half-time to claim the full three points, while the Bahrainis lost their first match after winning against Lebanon and then drawing with Qatar.

The defeat diminished the nationals’ hopes of earning an outright berth in the Asian Cup. They have one qualifying fixture remaining against Iraq tomorrow.

The nationals dropped to third on the Group C standings behind Oman and Qatar, and stayed ahead of Iraq and Lebanon. There are 44 nations in this stage of the qualifiers.

They have been divided into 10 groups—four with five teams and six with four teams. In each group, teams will play each other once at a centralised venue. The ten group winners and the five best runners-up will qualify for the final tournament.
