Paredes captures historic Asian weightlifting gold medals for Bahrain

Bahrain made sporting history yesterday after Lesman Paredes won the Kingdom its first two gold medals of the Asian Weightlifting Championships 2022, currently being held in Manama under the patronage of Supreme Council for Youth and Sports first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority president and Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) chief His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.

Competing in the men’s 96kg category, Paredes won his two golds in the Snatch and Overall competitions, while also taking a silver medal in the Clean and Jerk.

Paredes lifted an impressive and fast 182kg on his second attempt in the Snatch to secure the gold.

Po-Jen Chen of Chinese-Taipei claimed silver with a 177kg Snatch and Nurgissa Adiletuly of Kazakhstan won bronze on a 172kg attempt.

Paredes then claimed his Overall gold medal with a total weight of 397kg from his Snatch and Clean and Jerk efforts.

He lifted 215kg in the latter, but that was only enough to give him silver. Chen was the Overall runner-up with a 383kg total, while Artyom Antropov of Kazakhstan, the Clean and Jerk gold-medallist at 219kg, took third overall with a 377kg total.

Following his historic achievement, Paredes was congratulated by BOC secretary-general Faris Al Kooheji and Bahrain Weightlifting Federation president Eshaq Ibrahim Eshaq.

The curtain comes down on the Asian championship today.

Nearly 200 athletes from 30 nations across the continent have been competing in Bahrain.
