Ahmed Mohamed Al Zayed was yesterday crowned champion of the fourth Annual Bahrain Amateur Open golf championship, which came to a close at The Royal Golf Club.
Al Zayed won the title for the second time—adding to his maiden crown in 2020—after finishing the three-round tournament with a one-over-par gross total of 217.
Heading into the third day as solo leader, the Bahrain national team talent posted a closing score of two-over 74, which added to his first round score of 71 and second round total of 72.
Al Zayed had two birdies and a bogey on the front nine yesterday but then headed into the clubhouse with one birdie and four bogeys over the final nine holes.
He did enough, however, to secure the crown with a twostroke lead over his closest rival, Saleh Al Kaabi of Doha Golf Club.
Last year’s champion, Khalifa Mohamed Al Merisi, finished third overall a further two shots back.
Following play, the closing ceremony and prize-presentation was held under the auspices of Bahrain Golf Association president, Major-General Ali bin Saqer Al Nuaimi, who handed out the awards alongside other officials.
During yesterday ’s final round, Al Zayed was matched by Al Kaabi and Al Merisi with two-over-par 74 totals.
Taking fourth place overall after playing a final round score of 73 was Fahad Abdulla Al Hakam, who finished six shots behind Al Zayed, while fifth with an evenpar 72 on the day—the best score for round three—was Khalifa Duaij Al Kaabi, who was nine shots behind Al Zayed.
Ronan Armstrong came sixth with a three-round total of 11- over 227, Nasser Yacoob Saleh seventh at 12-over 228, Matt Vigurs and James Lanceley tied-eighth at 16-over 232, and Ali Al Shahrani 10th at 18-over 234.
Meanwhile, taking first place amongst the Nett scores was Abdulla Rashed with a 212 total.
Maaz bin Saad came second with a 214 Nett, while Chris Meyer was third on a 216 Nett.
Also coming away with a prize was Bahraini golfer Abdulrahman Ebrahim Saad, who claimed the Best Young Player award.
He finished tied-20th overall with a 33-over-par gross total of 249 after three rounds.
Al Zayed is one of only three players to have won the competition title.
The first winner of the tournament title was Ali Al Kawari in 2019, and then Al Zayed clinched the crown the following year after a three-hole play-off with Saudi Arabia’s Saud Al Sharif and Vigurs.
Last year, Al Merisi claimed the title after completing the 54 holes seven shots clear of his closest challenger.
