Bahrain’s young national tennis team had a difficult start yesterday to their Asia/ Oceania Group IV campaign in the Davis Cup 2022.
The nationals bowed to their rivals from Singapore 0-3 in their opening contest in Pool B of the competition, being held at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) courts in Isa Town.
During yesterday’s ties, Bahrain’s Hamad Abdula’al fell to Shaheed Alam 0-6, 0-6. Faris Al Toobli then suffered a 1-6, 1-6 defeat to Roy Hobbs.
The Singapore pair of Ethan Kai Xin Lye and Michael Dylan Jimenez then completed their sweep with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph over Abdula’al and Youssef Ashraf.
Elsewhere in Pool B yesterday, Kuwait defeated Guam 3-0, while in Pool A, Cambodia beat Bhutan 3-0.
The Davis Cup matches taking place in the Kingdom are part of Event B of Asia/Oceania Group IV.
Bahrain are one of nine nations competing. They have been divided into two pools.
The participating countries will play a single round-robin within their pool, after which the top team from each will meet in the final.
The winner of that matchup will gain qualification to Asia/Oceania Group III for next year’s Davis Cup, alongside Sri Lanka, who gained their promotion from Event A.
Bahrain’s players met yesterday with BTF president Shaikh Abdulaziz bin Mubarak Al Khalifa on the sidelines of play.
