Bahrain lose again in Davis Cup

Bahrain suffered their fourth straight loss yesterday while Singapore and Cambodia set up a meeting in the final of the Asia/Oceania Group IV event of the Davis Cup 2022, being held in the Kingdom at the Bahrain Tennis Federation courts in Isa Town.

The host Bahrainis lost to Laos 1-2 to complete the tournament campaign with four defeats.

Hamad Abdula’al lost 2-6, 4-6 to Laos’s Sataporn Simmalavong, and then Faris Altoobli suffered a 1-6, 4-6 defeat to Vitaya Rasavady. In the third match, Bahrain finally tasted victory as Isa Alqattan and Youssef Ashraf defeated Xaysavath Chansomphou and Somphone Songbandith 7-6 (7-2), 6-7 (6-8), 6-2 in a hard-fought affair.

Alqattan’s and Ashraf’s win was the Bahrainis’ only triumph in their Davis Cup campaign this year.

They finished their bid having also lost to Singapore, Guam and Kuwait in their other match-ups to go to the bottom of Pool B.

Meanwhile, Singapore finished as winners and therefore set-up a meeting against Pool A victors Cambodia today in the Promotional Play-off.

Turkmenistan will also play Kuwait for third place, Bhutan will face Guam for fifth and Mongolia will take on Laos for eighth overall.

The Davis Cup matches taking place in the Kingdom are part of Event B of Asia/ Oceania Group IV. Bahrain are one of nine nations competing.

The winner of the Promotional Play-off between Singapore and Cambodia will gain qualification to Asia/Oceania Group III for next year’s Davis Cup, alongside Sri Lanka, who gained their promotion from Event A.
