Cambodia promoted to Asia/Oceania Group III of Davis Cup tennis

Cambodia gained qualification to Asia/Oceania Group III for next year’s Davis Cup competition after winning the Group IV event in the Kingdom yesterday, held at Bahrain Tennis Federation courts in Isa Town.

The Cambodians claimed their promotion after defeating Singapore 2-1 in their play-off final.

They now join Sri Lanka in the higher division in 2023.

In yesterday’s final, Singapore’s Shaheed Alam gave his team a winning start after defeating Cambodia’s Mathew Krusling 6-1, 2-6, 6-4. But then Kenny Bun levelled the proceedings with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Roy Hobbs.

The doubles contest decided the match-up, with Bun and Krusling taking a 7-6 (7-4),6-2 win against Alam and Ethan Kai Xin Lye, sealing their promotion.

In other match-ups yesterday, Kuwait defeated Turkmenistan 3-0 to finish the Bahrain event in third place overall, while Guam beat Bhutan 3-0 to claim fifth place.

Laos won 2-1 against Mongolia to take seventh in the final classification.

Yesterday’s action wrapped up play in the Davis Cup matches in the Kingdom, which made up Event B of this year’s Asia/ Oceania Group IV.

There were nine nations overall competing, along with hosts Bahrain. Cambodia go through to Group III alongside the Sri Lankans, who gained their promotion from Event A held in August.
