Maser upsets Mutyala in ITF tennis

Yannic Maser of Germany upset top seed Vineeth Mutyala of India yesterday to advance to the second round of the boys’ singles in the Bahrain event of the International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour Juniors Calendar, which got underway at the Bahrain Tennis Federation courts in Isa Town.
Maser claimed a stunning 6-4, 6-2 victory to march through to the round of 16, where he will next go up against Issah Ali of Great Britain.
Ali was himself a winner during yesterday’s first round of play, cruising past Kuwaiti wild card Abdallah Abdulhasan 6-0, 6-0. Others to make it through to the boys’ singles second round were second seed Rayan Sajjid Koothrat of India, third seed Rashed Nawaf of Qatar, fourth seed Marko Milosavljevic of Serbia, sixth seed Youssef Elshafei of Egypt and eighth seed Tim Vaisman of Israel; along with Ethan Dasset of Belgium, Samprit Sharma of India, Mashari Nawaf of Qatar, Pavel Vysotin of Ukraine and Itay Cohen of Israel.
Koothrat marched through following a 6-4, 6-4 win against Rares Andrei Golescu. He will now face Cohen, who was a 6-0, 6-1 winner against Yassin Kashwaa of Egypt.
Milosavljevic defeated Zachary Habif of the US 6-1, 6-2, and will next play Mashari Nawaf, who was a 6-1, 7-6 (1) winner against Tibo Meermans of Belgium.
Vaisman will take on Sharma in round two, having beaten Yali Rodrigues Shrim of Brazil 6-2, 6-1, and with Sharma defeating Luke Cripps of Australia 6-4, 6-2. Yet to confirm their opponents in the second round are Elshafei, Rashed Nawaf, Dasset and Vysoin.
Elshafei was a 6-1, 6-1 winner against Saudi Arabian wild card Sattam Moafa, while Rashed Nawaf beat Muaz Malik of the US 6-1, 6-1.
Dasset was a 6-2, 6-1 victor against fifth seed Nikita Safonov, while Vysoin upset seventh seed Maciej Zarebski of Poland 6-2, 6-2.
Meanwhile, in the girls’ singles, top seed Tamara Emakova cruised into the second round with a 6-0, 6-0 triumph against Sushmita Shanmugam of India.
Tamara will next face Inbar Pony of Israel, who was a 7-5, 6-4 winner against Lea Marie Hajcik of Germany.
Also making it through to the girls’ round of 16 were second seed Yara Alhogbani of Saudi, Aleksandra Rozkalne of Latvia, Katarina Curcic of Serbia, eighth seed Marta Podolak of Germany, fourth seed Presha Shanthamoorthi of India, sixth seed Leah Baroudi of Syria, and third seed Mori Grylak, seventh seed Shira Buhadana, Roni Baranes and Isabell Esther Bilaus, all from Israel.
The tournament is part of the ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors Calendar.
It is a J5 level event, which is scheduled to continue until Sunday next week.
This week’s tournament will be followed by another J5 level event from 31 October to 5 November, and then a J4 event will take place from 7 to 13 November, both at the same venue.
