Bahrain-based karting sensation Lewis Smith was recently crowned Senior MAX champion in the 2022 Sakhir Rotax MAX Challenge (SRMC) at Bahrain International Karting Circuit (BIKC) in Sakhir.
This weekend, Lewis will be looking to build on his successful start of the season to secure another national karting title. Recently sponsored by pest management and disinfection experts VermineX, Lewis will be amongst a highly competitive field of karters who will be hitting the 1.414-kilometre CIK-FIA track at BIKC on Saturday (Editor’s note: 5 November) for the opening round of the 2022/2023 Bahrain Rotax MAX Challenge (BRMC).
Lewis was the Senior MAX runner-up in last season’s BRMC championship and will once again be amongst the favourites to contend for the crown. Competing with the BirelART Bahrain team, the 17-year-old British School of Bahrain student will be hoping to ride on the success of his SRMC campaign.
In the series’ three rounds, he won all three Finals and clinched his category’s title with a comfortable 19-point gap ahead of his closest challenger. He is now determined to maintain his triumphant ways in the BRMC, starting with this weekend’s events.
“Winning the Senior MAX title in the Sakhir Rotax MAX Challenge was a great achievement, but it has only fuelled my hunger for even more success,” an upbeat Lewis said. “I was able to finish up the championship with three wins from three Finals but it was a very tightly contested campaign from start to finish.
Hats off to my fellow competitors as I am learning a lot competing against them. “I enjoy the battles we have against one another and I look forward to even more exciting wheel-to-wheel racing in the coming months with the BRMC.”
Lewis has not stopped working since clinching his SRMC title. In between championships, the talented Briton has stepped up his intensive training programme both on and off the track—working on his physical fitness daily while also suiting up several days a week for some practice time at BIKC.
“I understand that it is very difficult to win a title with so many great opponents going up against you, and I am sure that it is even tougher to stay as the champion; so I try to never settle and to keep working hard to constantly improve,” Lewis said.
“If I’m not getting better every day, someone else is, and they will be the ones to take the crown. “I aspire to secure the season double with the SRMC and BRMC, so I need to keep working at a higher level and I’m focused on doing just that.”
Lewis has been boosted by the recent signing of VermineX as his new sponsor for the next two races of the BRMC campaign, which is set to feature a total of eight meetings, to be held all the way through to March of next year.
“I would like to thank VermineX Director David Nubel and General Manager Anthony Manabat for the support they are giving me in the upcoming two rounds,” Lewis said. “It is very motivating to have the backing of such a prestigious and valued company and I will do my very best to make them proud, along with my teammates and my friends and family.”
As one of the up-and-coming young karters who has been honing his skills in Bahrain, Lewis is a regular in national, regional and international championships and continues to excel at all levels. Lewis is continuously looking for support from Bahrain companies for sponsorship opportunities, which would offer exposure all across Europe and within the Kingdom of Bahrain.
