Olga marches through to girls’ singles semis in ITF tennis

Olga Danilova from Cyprus upset second seed Eda Numanoglu from Turkey yesterday to punch her ticket to the girls’ singles semi-finals of the second Bahrain event on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour Juniors Calendar 2022.

Olga fought back from a set down to oust her opponent 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 in a tightly contested match. The unseeded title-hopeful will now move forward to the final four, where she will face Laura Maser of Germany, who beat Isabell Esther Bilaus of Israel 6-2, 6-3 in another match yesterday.

The other semi-final will be between top seed Tamara Ermakova and fourth seed May Fadida from Israel. Tamara booked her berth following a 6-3, 6-1 win against sixth-seeded Israeli Kariman Buqai, while May marched through with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over her compatriot Shira Buhadana.

Meanwhile, the boys’ singles semi-finals were also set. Qatari brothers Rashed and Mashari Nawaf both advanced. Fourth-seeded Rashed beat Ethan Dasset of Belgium 6-1, 6-2 to make it through, while Mashari had a 6-1, 6-2 win over Yannick Maser of Germany.

Rashed will next take on Yahan Zhang of China, who beat sixth seed Aril Kayra Tuna of Turkey 6-4, 6-4. Mashari will play Seth Sadikov of Georgia, who beat Rares Andrei Golescu of Romania 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 to advance.

Also yesterday, girls’ doubles second seeds Tamara and Mori Grylak of Israel secured their place in the final following a gruelling 6-2, 5-7, 19-17 win against Israeli pair Shira and Inbar Pony. For the title, they will face either top seeds Munisa Ashurbekova of Uzbekistan and Eda, or Katarina Curcic of Serbia and Laura.

In the boys’ doubles, the Mashari brothers will take on Seth and American playing partner David Prasievi for their crown. Rashed and Mashari defeated Max Pade of Germany and Tim Vaisam of Israel 6-3, 6-3 in their semi-final clash, while Seth and David ousted Zhang and Ethan Gottschalk of Australia 6-2, 1-6, 10-6. Action in the tournament continues today at the Bahrain Tennis Federation courts in Isa Town.
