Top seeds march through in ITF tennis

Top seeds Lea Bathellier and Dmitry Bessonov marched through to their respective quarter-finals rounds yesterday in the third and final Bahrain event on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) World Tennis Tour Juniors Calendar 2022.

Lea cruised past Romania’s Daria-Maria Anghel 6-0, 6-0 to qualify for the girls’ singles round of eight, while Bessonov followed suit with a hard-earned 7-6 (1), 6-2 win over Yannick Maser of Germany.

Lea, from France, will next take on Roni Baranes of Israel in the quarters. Roni booked her berth following a 6-3, 6-4 win against Diva Bhatia of India yesterday.

Joining them in the next stage were third seed Eda Numanoglu of Turkey, fourth seed Mille Johanna Moerk of Denmark, fifth seed Anna Perelman, sixth seed Anna Kislyak, and eighth seed May Fadida with Kariman Buqai, both of Israel.

Kariman had the upset of the day after beating girls’ singles second seed Andra Izabella Sirbu of Romania 6-4, 6-0.

In the quarters, Eda faces Kislyak, May plays Mille and Kariman takes on Perelman.

On the distaff, Bessonov will next face Mashari Nawaf of Qatar, who ousted David Prasievi of the US 6-2, 6-2 in their round two match yesterday.

Others to go through were second seed Amit Shahar of Israel, Mashari’s third-seeded brother Rashed, fourth seed Vineeth Mutyala of India, eighth seed Maxwell Castle of Great Britain, Maciej Zarebski of Poland, and Tim Vaisman of Israel.

In the last eight, Mutyala and Vaisman face off, Castle plays Rashed Nawaf and Shahar goes up against Zarebski. Both the girls’ and boys’ quarters are scheduled for today.

Meanwhile, the semi-finals in the doubles draws have been set.

In the girls’ competition, Eda and Uzbek partner Munisa Ashurbekova will take on the Kislyak-Perelman pair, while Mille and Vlada Kozak of Great Britain will play Kariman and Cypriot Olga Danilova.

Eda and Munisa defeated Roni and Laura Maser 7-6 (11), 4-6, 10-5 while Kislyak and Perelman won 6-2, 6-2 against Juliane Koschinski of Germany and Defne Ursan of Turkey.

Mille and Vlada were 6-0, 6-1 winners against May and fellow-Israeli Ariel Avidan while Kariman and Olga upset top seeds Lea and Andra 2-6, 6-4, 10-8.

The boys’ doubles semi-finals will see the Nawaf brothers face Vaisman and Serbian teammate Milosavljevic, while Mutyala and Turkish partner Aril Kayra Tuna will play Samprit Sharma of India and Nikita Safonov.

The Nawafs upset top seeds Shahar and Zury Cohen 6-3, 6-2 to advance, while Miosavljevic and Vaisman eliminated Maser and Prasievi 5-7, 6-4, 10-7.

Mutyala and Tuna outplayed Vishnu Balachandar of the US and Raffaele Ciurnelli of Italy 6-1, 7-5 and Sharma and Safonov stunned second seeds Bessonov and Castle 6-4, 7-6 (4).
