Sitra, Ettihad claim basketball league wins

Sitra and Al Ettihad were both victorious last night as action in the 2022/2023 Zain Bahrain Basketball League resumed with the first games in the eighth week of play.

Sitra edged past a battling Samaheej 70-66, while Ettihad outclassed Isa Town 110-97, both at Zain Basketball Arena in Um Al Hassam.

Sitra took a slim 53-50 advantage into the final canto in their tightly contested clash with Samaheej, and did well to hold on until the end.

Stephen Hurt brought Samaheej to within a field goal, 66- 68, with just 16 seconds to play, but then Ali Eid iced the game with a pair of pressure-packed free-throws with one second on the clock.

Malik Winegless led Sitra with 22 points and 19 rebounds, while Eid had 13 and six assists and Abbas Fadhel Jasim scored 12.

Mohammed Hameed scored 13 for Samaheej, while Basel Adel contributed 11 and Hurt had 10 to go with 15 rebounds.

Sitra improved to a 3-4 winloss record while Samaheej dropped to 1-6.

In Ettihad’s win, they went ahead by as many as 28 points following their fine start, which gave them a 36-17 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Sayed Mohammed Hameed had a team-high 31 for Ettihad while Adrian Uter added 21 and 19 rebounds.

For Isa Town, Oumar Barry poured in 46 points while Mohamed Nabeel had 20.

Ettihad improved to a 4-2 record to move into the league standings’ top three while Isa Town stayed at the bottom of the table with a 1-5 mark.

League action continues tonight with Al Ahli taking on Bahrain Club at 5.30pm followed by defending champions Manama playing Al Hala at 7.30pm.
