Luis, Marjolaine victorious in Ironman Bahrain!

Bahrain Victorious 13 triathlete Vincent Luis and Marjolaine Pierre, both from France, won their respective race categories yesterday in an exciting Ironman 70.3 Middle East Championship Bahrain, which was held under the patronage of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince and Prime Minister.

The event took place over three stages with 1,061 competitors representing 77 countries in the fray.

They kicked things off with a 1.9-kilometre swim, which was followed by a 90km cycle, and concluding with a 21.1km run.

Luis triumphed amongst the Pro Men while Marjolaine was the top finisher from the Pro Women.

Meanwhile, Team Victorious and KHK, led by His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Representative of His Majesty the King for Humanitarian Works and Youth Affairs, and His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Deputy President of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports and President of the General Sports Authority and Bahrain Olympic Committee, along with Kristian Blummenfelt, came second amongst the men’s teams.

HH Shaikh Nasser participated in the cycling leg and put on a strong performance that allowed the team to finish second in the race, while HH Shaikh Khalid also produced a great display in the swimming stage.

Blummenfelt of Norway participated in the run. HH Shaikh Nasser expressed his happiness with this result, which came thanks to the great efforts of HH Shaikh Khalid and Blummenfelt.

HH Shaikh Nasser praised the strong return of HH Shaikh Khalid to swimming, praising at the same time the efforts of world champion Blummenfelt.

HH Shaikh Nasser affirmed that the Kingdom of Bahrain has a new achievement in adding to the series of accomplishments in organising the Ironman championship for the sixth time.

High speed

HH Shaikh Nasser was able to finish the 90km cycle in a time of two hours, 10 minutes and 42 seconds, while HH Shaikh Khalid completed the swimming leg in 41 minutes and 34 seconds.

Meanwhile, Blummenfelt clocked 1:08:04 in the run.

Team Victorious and KHK crossed the finish line in a total time of 4:03:19. Amongst the pro athletes, Luis won in 3:38:02.

Finishing second was Samuel Dickinson from Great Britain in 3:40:01, while Maximillian Sperl from Germany came third in 3:40:35.

Antonio Benito Lopez from Spain, Gabriel Sandor from Sweden and Andreas Salvisberg from Switzerland were fourth through sixth, while completing the top eight were Pieter Heemeryck from Belgium and Marcus Herbst from Germany.

Amongst the Pro Women, Marjolaine won in a time of 4:05:54. Natalie Van Coeverden from Australia was the runner-up in 4:07:11, while Diede Deideriks from the Netherlands completed the podium placers in 4:07:43 for third.

Briton Holly Lawrence was fourth and Lottie Lucas from the UAE fifth, while in sixth came Tiina Pohjalainen from Finland.

Seventh and eighth, respectively, were Shiva Leisner from Denmark and Frankie Sanjana from Great Britain.
