The Kingdom of Bahrain has clinched its first ever gold medals in the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championships. National team weightlifter Lesman Paredes Montano bagged the overall gold in the men’s 96kg weight category.

He clinched first place with a total lift of 397kg, which included 185kg in the Snatch and 212kg in the Clean and Jerk. Montano’s Snatch was also good enough for gold in that competition, while his Clean and Jerk mark earned him the silver, which was enough to give him the overall victory.

The IWF is organising the championship, being held in Bogota, Columbia.

The event also acts as the first qualifying tournament for the upcoming Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris in 2024.

Finishing in second place was Kazakh weightlifter Nurgissa Adiletuly with a total of 383kg, while Jhor Esneider Moreno Torres of Colombia came third with a 380kg total.

Bahrain Weightlifting Association (BWA) chairman Ishaq Ibrahim Ishaq congratulated His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, on Montano’s achievement.

He also extended congratulations to His Majesty the King’s Representative for Humanitarian Work and Youth Affairs HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, and Supreme Council for Youth and Sports First Deputy Chairman, General Sports Authority Chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee President HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa.
