Bahrain football team arrive in Basra for Gulf Cup

Bahrain’s senior men’s national football team arrived yesterday in Basra, Iraq, ahead of their participation in the 25th Gulf Cup.

The nationals travelled on a special chartered flight.

The delegation is being headed by Bahrain Football Association (BFA) board member and competitions committee chair Muhannad Al Ansari, and includes the national team’s coaching staff, headed by Helio Sousa, administrative team, media personnel and support staff.

Sousa reduced an initial training squad of 25 to 23 for the final of the Gulf Cup.

His last exclusions were Abdulkarim Al Fardan from Riffa and Ammar Abbas from Manama.

The rest of the squad includes Ali Madan (Al Ajman FC, UAE); Abdulla Yusuf (Persija Jakarta, Indonesia); Ali Haram, Hamad Shamsan, Jassim Al Shaikh, Komail Alaswad, Mohammed Jassim Marhoon and Sayed Redha Isa (Riffa); Abdulla Alkhalasi, Abdulwahab Al Malood, Ahmed Al Sherooqi, Amine Hasan, Sayed Mohammed Jaafar and Waleed Al Hayam (Muharraq); Ahmed Bughammar, Mahdi Humaidan, Mohammed Adel and Sayed Dhiya Saeed (Al Khaldiya); Ebrahim Al Khattal and Mahdi Abdullatif (Manama); Ebrahim Lutfallah (Al Ahli); Omar Salem (Budaiya); Hamza Adrees (East Riffa).

Prior to their departure, the national team welcomed Supreme Council for Youth and Sports deputy chairman, General Sports Authority (GSA) president and Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) chief His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa to training.

BFA president Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa bin Ahmed Al Khalifa was on hand, as were BOC vice-president Shaikh Isa bin Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, GSA vice-president His Highness Shaikh Salman bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, BFA vice-president His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Ali bin Isa Al Khalifa, GSA CEO Dr Abdulrahman Askar, BOC secretary general Faris Al Kooehji, and other high-ranking officials.

Bahrain are one of eight teams in this year’s Gulf Cup.

They are in Group B for the opening stage alongside the UAE, Qatar and Kuwait.

Group A features Iraq, Yemen, Saudi Arabia and OMan.

The Bahrainis play their first game on Saturday against the UAE at Basra’s Al Minaa Olympic Stadium. They then play Qatar on 10 January and Kuwait on 13 January.
