Bahrain’s elite athlete Winfred Yavi has been nominated for the CISM Athlete of the Year 2022 Award by the International Military Sports Council (CISM).

The prestigious honour is presented to an athlete in order to identify and recognise the most significant sportive performance.

The CISM considers several factors in its shortlist of nominees, including eligibility, fair play, personal empathy, discipline, respect to the rules, and self-behaviour, among others.

Winfred has been chosen following her sensational season last year, which included a gold medal in the women’s individual classification at the 58th World Military Cross-Country Championship in Portugal, where she also won a silver medal for the women’s teams’ category and another gold in the mixed relay.

The CISM Sports Committee appraisal said: “Private Winfred Yavi Mutile has shown a great connection to her national shirt, making herself available to the Bahrain team for multiple races within the same championship and honoring the event in the best possible way, in full compliance with CISM values such as discipline, sacrifice and friendship.

“It is appreciable when top athletes of international federations (Olympic and world finalists) decide to take part in a military championship, bringing prestige to the entire event and to all military sports thanks to their technical performances.”

Bahrain’s fans are welcome to vote for Winfred at www.milsport.one. Voting is open until 15 February.

Winfred is one of 10 athletes vying for the women’s award.

The others are Ellen Caroline De Souza from Brazil (aeronautical pentathlon), Sonja Greinacher from Germany (basketball), Ye Na Park from South Korea (football), Aila Alves Miranda from Brazil (naval pentathlon), Deborah Ferrand from France (parachuting), Marie Riou from France (sailing), Margaux Fabre from France (swimming and lifesaving), Milena Titoneli Guimaraes from Brazil (taekwondo), and Jeanne Lehair from France (triathlon).
