Bahraini elite athlete Desi Jisa Mokonin narrowly missed out on the gold medal while posting a new personal best in the women’s race at the Ooredoo Doha Marathon, held in Doha.
Mokonin claimed the silver medal in the event after completing the 42.2-kilometre race distance in two hours 20 minutes and 47 seconds—the best time for the 25-year-old in her career.
She crossed the finish line just a second behind winner Meseret Belete of Ethiopia.
Beatrice Cheptoo of Kenya claimed the bronze medal in 2:22:28. The event was a World Athletics Label Road Race at the Elite level.
Mokonin was one of six top-class international women’s athletes taking part. Her time was nearly three minutes quicker than her previous personal best of 2:23:39, which she clocked in 2018 in Amsterdam.
Mokonin’s race in Doha was her first major international run of the new calendar year.
