The Bahrain Football Association (BFA) announced yesterday that it has begun the steps to review the mechanism and requirements of installing video assistant referee (VAR) systems in Bahrain’s football stadiums.

This was announced by BFA secretary general Rashid Al Zoubi.

The BFA said that VAR technology has become a necessity and it will soon become a requirement for organising any football competition, especially at the international level.

Al Zoubi pointed out that there are vigorous efforts to implement the technology by the start of the 2023/2024 season.

He noted that the application of VAR technology is a complex issue and it will require the BFA’s coordination with many relevant authorities for its implementation.

Al Zoubi noted that, according to initial inquiries and a series of meetings held between the BFA’s committees, including the referees’ committee, the cost of applying VAR technology would amount to around BD450,000 for three seasons.

Al Zoubi confirmed that the BFA is in the process of holding coordination meetings with the Ministry of Information Affairs, the Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs and other concerned authorities to discuss the issue.
