Emma advances in girls’ singles play

Emma Cohen of Great Britain cruised into the girls’ singles second round of the Bahrain International Tennis Federation (ITF) J30 event, currently being played at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) courts in Isa Town.

Third-seeded Emma defeated Kenzie Ana Rabbat of Romania 6-1, 6-0 to make it through to the next stage.

The tournament is a part of the 2023 calendar of the ITF Juniors Circuit.

Emma will next play Minxu Zhou of China in round two.

Minxu was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Elena Utkina. Also advancing yesterday was fourth seed Roni Baranes of Israel, who defeated Hajar Zaidan of Bahrain 6-2, 6-0.

Roni will next play Aleksandra Rozkaine of Latvia.

Top seed May Fadida of Israel went through with a walkover win against Polina Burenina, while Stefaniia Bondarenko upset eighth seed Ariel Avidan of Israel 6-1, 6-3.

May will next take on Eira Gabrielle Alegria of the Philippines in the second round, while Stefaniia will play Diya Tamse of India.

In other match-ups, second seed Emma Fantusis of Bulgaria will take on Alina Sogomonyan, sixth seed Ada Kumru of Turkey will take on Diana Moshoy, seventh seed Liliya Piskun will face Monique Wigoda of Israel and Anelle Margaret Tait of Canada will play Alesia Breaz of Romania.

Meanwhile, Bahrain’s Faris Al Toobli narrowly lost his boys’ singles first round match to Artem Golikov 6-4, 6-7 (6), 5-7 in a tight encounter.

Joining Artem as winners yesterday in the boys’ singles draw were fourth seed Itay Cohen of Israel, sixth seed Bilal Asim of Pakistan, seventh seed Patrik Hinz of Germany, Giovanni Ciocca of Italy, and Eidad Atzom of Israel. In the girls’ doubles, Bahrain’s Hajar Zaidan and Aleksandra advanced to the quarter-finals after defeating Alica Haddad of Great Britain and Kenza Ksouri of Tunisia 6-4, 6-2.

Also through were fourth seeds Lilya and Alina, Roni Fishel of Israel and Sofiya Khegay of Uzbekistan, Romanians Alesia and Bianca Nica, and Madina Omarova of Kazakhstan and Karine Ruslanova of Uzbekistan.

In the boys’ doubles, Giovanni and Portuguese partner Miguel Maia upset top seeds Rayan Sajjad Koothrat of India and Muaz Malik of the US 6-4, 2-6, 10-7 to make it through to the quarters.

Second seeds Yannick Theodor Alexandrescou of Romania and Jakub Smejcky of the Czech Republic made it through, as did Arkhip Kozlov and Xin Zhou of China, who stunned third seeds Hinz and Alex Bergomi of Switzerland 6-4, 1-6, 10-6.

The others to advance were Rafael Asadullin and Kirill Kalennik, Eldad Atzom and Snir Morag of Israel, Bilal and Yash Bahalkar of Great Britain, Daniil Bogatov and Marat Salbiev, and Itay Ezra and Noam Yishayahu from Israel. Play in the tournament continues today at the BTF.
