Aleksandra through to Bahrain ITF quarter-finals

Aleksandra Rozkalne from Latvia marched through to the quarter-finals of the girls’ singles yesterday following an upset victory over fourth seed Roni Baranes of Israel in the Bahrain International Tennis Federation (ITF) J30 event, being played at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) courts in Isa Town.

The tournament is part of the 2023 calendar of the ITF World Tennis Tour Juniors.

Aleksandra needed to dig deep to claim her victory in three sets, and in the end finished things off with a 6-3, 6-7 (4), 6-1 score line.

Aleksandra will next take on sixth seed Ada Kumru of Turkey in the round of eight.

Ada was a comfortable 6-0, 6-0 victor in her second round match yesterday against Diana Moshoy.

Meanwhile, number one seed May Fadida of Israel led the girls’ top three seeds into the quarters.

May won 6-1, 6-0 against Eira Gabrielle Alegria of the Philippines and will next take on Alesia Breaz of Romania, who was a 6-4, 7-6 (3) victor against Anelle Margaret Tait of Canada.

Second seed Emma Fantusis was also through after beating Alina Sogomonyan 7-6 (5), 6-1.

Emma will now take on seventh seed Liliya Piskun, who beat Monique Wigoda of Israel 6-3, 6-4 for her place in the last eight.

Third seed Emma Cohen of Great Britain followed suit, winning against Minxu Zhou of China 6-3, 6-3 yesterday.

She will now play Stefaniia Bondarenko in the quarter-finals.

Stefaniia defeated Diya Tamse of India 6-2, 6-0 yesterday.

On the distaff, Yash Bahalkar of Great Britain continued his fine run in the boys’ singles after making it through to the quarter-finals with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Ofek Sivan of Israel.

After taking down the boys’ top seed in the first round, Bahalkar will now play sixth seed Bilal Asim of Pakistan in the round of eight.

Asim won against Snir Morag of Israel 7-5, 6-1 in their second round match yesterday.

Jaku Smejcky is the only other seeded player remaining in the boys’ singles draw.

The third seed booked his quarter-final seat after beating Eldad Atzmon of Israel 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4 yesterday, and will now play Noam Yishayahu, also from Israel.

The other matches in the quarters will see Giovanni Ciocca of Italy take on Rares Andrei Golescu from Romania, and Alex Bergomi of Switzerland face Yannick Theodor Alexandrescou of Romania.

Play in the ITF tournament continues today.
