Bahrain wrapped up their unsuccessful qualifying bid for the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 yesterday with a 72-95 loss to Japan in the city of Takasaki.

The nationals fell behind 19- 32 at the end of the first quarter and faced deficits as large as 25 points the rest of the way.

Mustafa Hussain scored 15 points to lead the Bahrainis in the loss while Wayne Chism added 14 points and 13 rebounds.

Maitham Jameel and Ali Jaber each had 11 for Bahrain, while Mohammed Ameer and Ali Hussain scored nine apiece.

Joshua Hakwinson was the top man for the Japanese with 22 points, while Yutaroh Suda added 20.

The result marked Bahrain’s 10th loss in Group F of the Asian qualifiers and they finished this stage with two wins in their 12 games, placing them last in their pool.

Ahead of them were Australia, China, Japan and Iran, all of whom qualified for the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

Kazakhstan joined the Bahrainis as non-qualifiers.

The FIBA Basketball World Cup is set to be played from 25 August to 10 September, co-hosted by Indonesia, Japan and the Philippines.
