Boschung triumphs in F2 Sprint

Ralph Boschung raced to an impressive victory yesterday in the season-opening Sprint Race of the 2023 FIA Formula 2 Championship, held in support of the Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix at Bahrain International Circuit (BIC) in Sakhir.

Boschung started on the reverse grid pole and went on to win after 23 laps in a time of 41 minutes 50.597 seconds.

The Campos Racing driver took advantage of the battles behind him to build a comfortable gap to the finish.

He won by 10.848 seconds ahead of Dennis Hauger of MP Motorsport, while Victor Martins of ART Grand Prix claimed the final podium step in third 16.162s behind Boschung.

Classified fourth was Ayumu Iwasa (+24.494s) of DAMS, while Theo Pourchaire (+29.709s) came fifth in the other ART Grand Prix car and Jehan Daruvala (+30.901s) was sixth for MP.

Completing the top eight and the race’s points scorers were Boschung ’s teammate Kush Maini (+41.541s) and Enzo Fittipaldi (+43.065s) of Rodin Carlin.

The F2 field returns to the track today afternoon at 1.20pm for the weekend’s Feature Race, to be held over 32 laps or 60 minutes.

Pourchaire clinched pole for the event after posting a best lap of 1:40.903 in F2 qualifying, held earlier in the day yesterday.

He finished 0.751s ahead of Martins, while Richard Verschoor of Van Amersfoort Racing came third 0.900s off the pace.
