Bahrain’s senior men’s national golf team won the silver medals yesterday in the 25th GCC Men Golf Championship, which came to a close at The Royal Golf Club at Riffa Views following 72 holes of play.

Team member Ahmed Mohammed Al Zayed came away with a bronze medal in individual play. The Bahraini men finished five strokes behind tournament champions Qatar on the teams’ classification.

The nationals were 50 over par after playing 17-over in yesterday’s fourth and final round. The Qataris were 52 shots over and were 24-over-par on the last day. At the end of yesterday’s round, the awards presentation and closing ceremony took place, attended by General Sports Authority CEO Dr Abdulrahman Askar and Bahrain Golf Association president Brig Col Ali bin Saqer Al Nuaimi.

The Bahraini seniors team featured Khalifa Duaij Alkaabi, Fahad Al Hakam, Al Zayed and Khalifa Mohammed Khalifa. Only the top three scores are counted on each day and yesterday it was the totals of Alkaabi (+4), Al Hakam (+6) and Al Zayed (+7) that made it onto the score card, with the +11 of Khalifa disregarded.

The UAE finished as bronze-medallists 65 shots over par, while Saudi Arabia (+98) were fourth and Oman (+128) fifth, while Kuwait did not finish. Meanwhile, Al Zayed claimed his individual bronze medal after posting an 11-over-par 299 gross score after completing four rounds.

Bahrain’s senior men’s silver medals added to the gold of the junior national golf team, which they won in the 14th GCC Juniors U18 Golf Championship, held simultaneously. The young Bahrainis clinched the coveted title after finishing their competition, held over just 54 holes, with a total team score of 44 over par. The team featured Abdulrahman Hasan Mehaizea, Abdulrahman Ebrahim Alseedi and Abdulla Rashid Saeed. Mehaizea also claimed the individual juniors bronze medal.
