Bahrain volleyball giants Dar Kulaib last night secured their berth in the quarter-finals of the first West Asia Men’s Club Championship, currently being played in Amman, Jordan.

Dar Kulaib ensured their place after cruising past South Gas SC of Iraq 3-0 (25-21, 25- 16, 25-19) in their third Group B fixture of the tournament’s preliminary round.

It was their second win in three matches after previously defeating Shabab Nabi Ilyas from Palestine in their first assignment but then losing to Al Rayyan of Qatar in their follow-up game.

They have one match to play in this stage of the competition.

It will be tomorrow against Shabab Al Hussein of Jordan, starting at 4pm, Bahrain time.

The tie will determine their final standing in their pool heading into the round of eight.

Dar Kulaib got off to a good start yesterday against South Gas and they sealed the first set with a double block between Nasser Anan and Hassan Alaiwi.

The Bahrainis cruised to a more dominant second-set win, which ended on an opponents’ service error.

Dar Kulaib then rode their momentum in the third set, going ahead early, which allowed Brazilian head coach Leandro Kakaroto to end the contest with more of their younger players alongside veteran stars Mohammed Yaqoob and Mahmoud Abdulwahed.

Yaqoob eventually supplied the spike that pegged the final score.

The Bahrain international star finished as the team’s leading scorer with 17 points, while Anan, who has signed from Al Ahli for this tournament, contributed 14 points in the win.

Also playing key roles for Dar Kulaib yesterday were Ali Habib, Ayman Isa, libero Hussain Sultan, and Argentinian professional Juan Barrera.

Dar Kulaib are the lone Bahraini side in the competition, which is being organised and run by the West Asia Volleyball Association and is scheduled to take place until March 18.

Group A in the tournament features Kuwait SC of Kuwait, Police SC of Qatar, Almeena VC of Yemen, Oman SC of Oman and home team Al Wehdat.

Following a single round-robin, the top four teams in each group march through to the tournament’s quarter-finals, which will be held in the knockout system.

Aside from the West Asia men’s tournament, Dar Kulaib are also set to compete in the Golden Square semi-finals of the 2022/2023 Isa bin Rashid Bahrain Volleyball League.
