Bahrain to go for athletics gold

Bahrain’s international athletes are set to compete in a pair of top-level meetings over the next week outside the Kingdom.

The national senior men’s and women’s teams will be taking part in the third West Asian Athletics Championships in Doha, starting today; while the national youth squad will be competing in the fifth Asian U18 Athletics Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan from tomorrow to Sunday.

The men’s team in the Qatari capital include Dawit Fikadu and Abdulghani Mohammed Hameed (5,000 metres and 10,000m) along with Abdelrahman Mahmoud (shot put); while the women’s squad features Marta Hirpato Yota and Tigest Mekonen (800m and 1,500m), Bontu Rebitu (10,000m), Fatima Mubarak Issa (long jump) and Noora Salem Jasim (shot put).

Bahrain are one of 12 teams representing their countries in the West Asian event.

The others are Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Palestine, Iraq, Oman, Yemen, Palestine, Lebanon, Yemen and hosts Qatar.

The events are set to take place at Suheim bin Hamad Stadium at Qatar SC in Doha. Meanwhile, Bahrain have five up-and-coming athletes set to compete in the Uzbek capital.

They include two boys in Abdulaziz Mustafa (800m) and Abbas Abu Bakr (100m and 200m); and three girls in Lujian Mahmoud Abdulqader (200m), Maysa Salah Al Tamimi (100m) and Laila Salem (100m and 200m).
