Bahraini elite athlete Winfred Yavi had a spectacular start to her international outdoor season last night with an impressive victory in the women’s 3,000 metres steeplechase at the Doha Diamond League, held at the Qatari capital.

Winfred claimed her win in a world leading time of nine minutes 04.38 seconds to kick off her new campaign in style.

She was marginally ahead of runner-up Sembo Almayew of Ethiopia, who finished in 9:05.83, while Faith Cherotich of Kenya came third in 9:06.43 amongst the 13 runners who took part.

Commenting on her win, Winfred said: “Well, I’m extremly happy.

My goal is the world championship in Budapest. “I’m thinking of getting in the podium, I want to to win the gold in the Asian Games.

“I am so happy to be in Doha, it feels like home.”

Winfred is one of Bahrain’s leading athletes who will be one of the national team’s top hopefuls of a podium at this year’s World Athletics Championships 2023, to be held in August.
