Phil Bauhaus came close to claiming a spectacular victory yesterday as he captured a second successive podium in the 2023 Tour de France.

The German finished third overall at the end of the 181.8-kilometre fourth leg.

Bauhaus was amongst the leaders on the furious sprint to the finish, but had to settle for his final classification behind winner Jasper Philipsen of Alpecin-Deceuninck and runner-up Caleb Ewan of Lotto Dstny.

Bauhuas had one day earlier finished second on the third stage of the tour. He was the only Bahrain Victorious rider to finish in the top 20 yesterday.

His closest teammate was Nikias Arndt in 30th, while Mikel Landa and Pello Bilbao were 70th and 71st, respectively.

Fred Wright finished 116th overall for the stage, and Woet Poels was 142nd. Jack Haig in 153rd and Matej Mohoric in 169th rounded out the Bahrain Victorious squad.

In the general classification after 764.6km in total over four stages, Landa remained in the leading ranking amongst the squad although dropped to 12th, while Bilbao went to 18th.

Haig remained their third-best competitor in 34th.

Bauhaus, meanwhile, moved to eighth overall on the race’s points general classification, and Bahrain Victorious’ eight-rider squad remained second in the team ranking—42s behind leaders Jumbo-Visma and tied with UAE Team Emirates.

The Tour de France continues today with stage five covering 163km, beginning from the city of Pau and ending in the commune of Laruns.

This year’s Tour de France features a total of 3,404km and over 55,000 vertical meters of climbing across 21 stages.

The Tour de France is the second of three Grand Tour events on this year’s Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) World Tour.

A Grand Tour event is a road cycling race that is one of the three major European professional stage races.

The first of the season was the Giro d’Italia held in May, and the third, following the Tour de France 2022, will be the Vuelta a Espana from August 26 to September 17.
