Bahrain second on athletics medal table at Arab Games

Bahrain’s athletics team finished second on the medal table in their sport at the 15th Arab Games, currently taking place in Algeria.

The nationals scooped up 25 medals in all on the track and in the field, including 14 gold, six silver, and five bronze medals. The Bahrainis finished behind only Algeria, who came away with 35 medals in athletics, of which 14 were gold, eight silver, and 13 bronze.

Morocco was third on the medal table with 26 medals, including four gold, five silver, and seven bronze. Bahrain’s athletic contingent was one gold medal away from topping the table.

The national team’s gold medalists were spearheaded by Bontu Rebitu, Edidiong Odiong, Oluwakemi Adekoya, and Hajar Alkhaldi, who each claimed a golden double. Bontu triumphed in both the women’s 5,000m and 10,000m.

Edidiong won gold in the women’s 100m and was also part of the title-winning women’s 4x100m relay team. Oluwakemi claimed the women’s 400m crown as well as the 400m hurdles gold, while Hajar won the women’s 200m and was also part of the 4x100m relay team.

The Bahrainis’ other gold medalists were Marta Yota in the women’s 1,500m, Dawit Fikadu in the men’s 10,000m, Aminat Jamal in the women’s 100m hurdles, Saeed Alkhaldi in the men’s 100m, Winfred Yavi in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase, Noora Jasim in the women’s shot put, and Birhanu Balew in the men’s 5,000m.

Meanwhile, joining Edidiong and Hajar on the 4x100m relay team were Fatima Mubarak and Zenab Mahamat. Elsewhere at the Arab Games, Amal Fardan won a silver medal in athletics for people of determination in the women’s shot put. Her achievement was Bahrain’s second podium appearance in the sport, adding to the gold claimed by Elias Alyassi in the men’s 100m.

Bahrain’s overall tally at the Arab Games is now 30 after four days of competition in all sports. They include 15 gold medals, eight silver medals, and seven bronze medals.
