Team Bahrain Victorious rider Matej Mohoric claimed an impressive podium in third yesterday on the ninth stage of the 2023 Tour de France. The Slovenian finished the 182.4-kilometre leg in four hours 20 minutes 16 seconds— not far behind winner Michael Woods and runner-up Pierre Latour.
“Today was not a stage where I planned to go for my own result but I found myself in the breakaway from the start,” Mohoric said. “First, I hesitated to see if any of our climbers would make it across. I then gave it my best to go for the win, but I hesitated too much and it was always going to be hard to come back.
“In the last climb, Woods and Latour had something left to win the stage. Mike proved he was the strongest today, so third is the best possible result.” Teammate Pello Bilbao classified 22nd in the stage and Mikel Landa was 27th. Jack Haig finished 37th and Woet Poels 61st, with Nikias Arndt in 102nd, Fred Wright 112th, and Phil Bauhaus 125th.
Bilbao stayed the highest-ranked Bahrain Victorious member on the general classification in 11th, followed by Landa in 14th and Haig in 38th. Bahrain Victorious is now in first place on the teams’ general ranking, with a 44-second gap from Ineos Grenadiers. There is a rest day today and the tour continues tomorrow with the 167.5km 10th stage from Vulcania to Issoire.
