Bahrain’s senior men’s national volleyball team had to settle for the silver medals yesterday in the fourth AVC Men Challenger, which came to a close in Chinese-Taipei. The nationals took a quick 5-0 lead in the first set, but it was all downhill from there as the Thais found their groove and rode their momentum all the way until the end of the 3-0 (20-25, 20-25, 16-25) sweep.

Despite the loss, the Bahrainis made national sporting history after qualifying for their first-ever championship-decider at the senior men’s level in any Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) tournament. It was thus their maiden silver medal in a continental competition for senior men. The Bahrainis also assured a better finish than their bronze-medal win in the 2022 AVC Cup for Men, held in Thailand.

By missing out on their first-ever gold in an AVC event, the nationals could not claim the lone berth in the 2023 edition of the FIVB Volleyball Challenger Cup (VCC) in Qatar at the end of this month. The winner of the 2023 VCC shall be promoted and compete in the 2024 edition of the Volleyball Nations League.

Following their campaign in Chinese-Taipei, Bahrain now shift their focus to the 22nd Asian Senior Men’s Volleyball Championship from August 18 to 26 in Tehran.
