Bahrain beat Mexico in handball worlds

Bahrain claimed 29th place overall yesterday on the final rankings of the 10th Men’s U19 Handball World Championship 2023, held in Croatia.

The nationals secured their place on the tournament-ending classification with a 37-21 victory over Mexico in their concluding ranking game.

The nationals used a dominant second half in which they outscored their opponents by 12, 19-7, after heading into the interval with a slim 18-14.

By securing 29th place overall, the Bahrainis had their lowest ranking in their five appearances in the worlds.

They were eighth in 2007, 17th in 2011, 22nd in 2017 and 17th in 2019. Salman Alshowaikh finished as Bahrain’s leading score with nine goals against the Mexicans.

He was later named the Player of the Match and was presented with a prize after the final buzzer.

Nooh Almusawi added six, while Ali Mohamed scored four goals.

Contributing three conversions apiece were Jaffar Farsan, Mohamed Almarzooq and Mohamed Ali; while Ahmed Fardan and Abdulla Mohamed had two each.

Rounding out the scorers for Bahrain with a goal apiece were Sayed Mahmood Alfalahi, Sayed Husain Almahafda, Shuaib Abdulla, Elias Ali and Ali Kadhem.

Brian Gonzalez and Yahir Reyes had five goals each to lead Mexico.

This year’s youth handball worlds is its first edition to feature a 32-team field.

The Bahrainis were coached in the tournament by Icelandic tactician Maksim Akbachev.
