Bahrain’s under-23 Olympic football team played to a 1-1 draw with their counterparts from Vietnam yesterday in an international friendly match played in their overseas training camp in Bangkok.

Hassan Abdulnabi scored the lone goal for the Bahrainis, who wrapped up their programme at the Thai capital under head coach Dario Basic.

Yesterday’s game was the Olympic team’s seventh exhibition during their camp and third against an opposing national Olympic team.

The others were against Kuwait, which they had also drawn, and Thailand, which they won 2-0. The Bahrainis had also played four other exhibition games against local Thai clubs.

The Kingdom’s under-23s conducted their camp in preparation for their upcoming qualifiers for the 2024 AFC U23 Asian Cup, scheduled to take place next month.

The 28-player Olympic squad are now scheduled to return to Bahrain following their stint in Bangkok.

The players who participated in the training were Abdulnabi, Abdulla Al Subaie, Salem Al Dosari, Mustafa Al Salem, Omar Saber, Hussein Harouneh, Hussein Abdulkarim, Abdulla Freih, Ahmed Dia, Abdulrahman Al Obaidly, Adel Al Rumaihi, Saleh Al Zubaidi, Mubarak Mohammed, Abdulla Al Khalasi, Salman Abdulla, Mohammed Abdul Qayyum, Ahmed Kamel, Khalifa Al Lafi, Salman Adel, Khalil Ebrahim, Ahmed Musalam, Hassan Issa, Ali Mohammed Redha, Ahmed Abdulhameed, Hussein Al Aker, Yasseen Karim, Salem Hussein and Sayed Jawad Haider.

Bahrain’s group matches in the qualifiers are set to be held in the Kingdom.

They are in Group D with Japan, Palestine and Pakistan.

There are 11 groups in all, with 10 comprising four nations and one featuring three.

Each group will host their matches at a centralised venue. Bahrain have qualified just once in the previous five editions of the AFC U-23 Asian Cup.

That was in the 2020 event held in Thailand, when they did not make it past the group stage.
