Bahrain’s rowing team begin their medal quest today at the 19th Asian Games in their respective events at Fuyang Water Sports Centre.

The trio of Maryam Abdulhameed, Fahad Albanki and Omar Alhasan will be in action in the first rounds of their events.

Maryam will be competing in the women’s single sculls heats.

She will be in the first of three races in this round, in which the top three move on to the semi-finals.

The remaining rowers will move on to the repechage, which is a second chance to qualify for the semis.

Maryam will be up against rowers from the Philippines, South Korea, Uzbekistan, and Hong Kong in her event.

On the distaff, Albanki and Alhasan will be contesting the men’s doubles sculls.

They are set to appear in the second of two heats. Only the winners of each race move on to the final, while the remaining two-man crews will compete in a repechage.

Albanki and Alhasan are up against crews from Iraq, Hong Kong, Iran, Uzbekistan and Thailand.

Rowing is one of the five sports Bahrain is competing in that begin their events before the Asian Games’ official opening ceremony on Saturday.

Action in both volleyball and football got underway yesterday with rowing today, sailing tomorrow, and table tennis on Friday.
