Latypov advances to Asiad boxing quarters

Bahraini Olympian Danis Latypov advanced to the men’s over-92kg quarter-finals in boxing yesterday at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China. Latypov won his bout against Mohammad Mlaiyes of Syria via walkover.

Latypov will next face Kamshybek Kunkabayev of Kazakhstan in the round of eight on Saturday. Meanwhile, Bahrain’s Sulim Maraev, Azamat Chotchaev and Zelimkhan Yakub all bowed out of medal contention in their respective weight classes in men’s judo.

Maraev lost to Davlat Bobonov of Uzbekistan by ippon, the highest score a fighter can achieve in the martial arts, in the men’s under-90kg round of 16. Chotchaev lost to China’s Ruixuan Li by ippon in the men’s over-100kg round of 16, and Yakub lost to Nurlykhan Sharkhan of Kazakhstan by ippon in the men’s under-100kg round of 16.

Yesterday’s contests wrapped up Bahrain’s participation in men’s judo in Hangzhou. In shooting, Bahrain’s Maryam Alasam ranked 10th after the first stage in the women’s skeet qualification. She had a total score of 68 points after three of the five rounds in her competition.

Fellow-Bahraini Maryam Hassani was 21st with a 61 score and Latifa Alnajem 23rd with 59. Stage two will be held today. In the skeet team women’s competition, the trio of Alasam, Hassani and Alnajem were ranked seventh with 188 points after the first stage, with the second taking place today.

Tammar Alwatt was the top-ranked Bahraini in men’s skeet qualification. Alwatt had a total score of 68 after three rounds in the first stage, with stage two to be held today. In the 10m air rifle mixed team qualification round, Khalid Al Doseri and Safa Al Doseri were ranked 10th overall from 21 pairings with a 625.2 score.

In e-sports yesterday, two Bahrainis were in the fray in the Street Fighter V: Champion Edition competition. Ahmed Abdulaziz Bahlool claimed a round of 32 wins against Phettoulath Chanthavongsack of Laos 2-0.

Bahlool advanced to the winners’ bracket first round, where he beat Mohammed Albanna of the UAE 2-0. But in the second round, Bahlool lost to Li-Wei Lin 0-2, relegating him to the losers’ bracket.

There, he first defeated Kenryo Hayashi of Japan 2-1 in their round four encounter, but then went no further after being taken down in his losers’ bracket fifth-round match to Yuk Cheung Wong of Hong Kong. Bahraini Ayman Salman lost his qualification match to Chi Hou Chan of Macao 1-2 and was eliminated.
