Myanmar booked their place yesterday in the play-off round of the Asia/ Oceania Group V competition in the 2023 Davis Cup. The zonal event is currently being hosted in the Kingdom, with matches taking place at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) hard courts in Isa Town.
Myanmar booked their spot after defeating Bhutan 3-0 to claim their second successive win in Pool A of the tournament’s preliminary round. They thus advance with an unbeaten record so far, having also defeated Bahrain in their first match-up.
The Bahrainis were idle yesterday but take on Bhutan today to determine second in their group. However, only the top teams from each of the four pools advance to the play-offs. Bahrain will be represented by top players Elyas Abdulnabi, Faris Altoobli, Shadi Kallel and Hasan Abdulnabi.
They are coached by Abdulkarim Abdulnabi. In other match-ups yesterday, Nepal defeated Yemen 2-1 in Pool B; the Maldives beat Bangladesh 2-1 in Pool C; and in Pool D, Laos defeated Tajikistan 3-0 and Brunei beat Macau 2-1.
Thirteen men’s national teams from across the continent are participating in the competition. Today is the last day of action in the preliminary round, with each pool winner advancing to the playoffs. The two winners from that stage will then be promoted to Group IV for next year’s Davis Cup competition.
