Top seeds march through in ITF tennis

Top seeds Ariana Gogulina from Kazakhstan and Venkat Rishi Batlanki of the US both barged into their respective quarter-finals yesterday in the Bahrain ITF Juniors 2023 tournament, currently being played at the Bahrain Tennis Federation (BTF) hard courts in Isa Town.

Ariana cruised past Ayris Tokac of Turkey 6-0, 6-0 to make it through to the girls’ singles round of eight, while Venkat eased past Sergiy Rafiee of Great Britain 6-0, 6-1 to qualify.

Ariana is next set to take on sixth seed Liliya Piskun in her last eight clash.

Other match-ups in that stage pit third seed Sosanne Malak of Egypt against Luisa Fusil of Slovenia, Adiya Omarbek of Kazakhstan against Arina Malygina, and seventh seed Alina Sogomonyan against Simon a Cucu of Romania.

Amongst the boys, Venkat will be facing off with eighth seed Dev Kanbargimath of Romania in the quarter-finals.

Dev outclassed Mustafa Ege Topbas of Turkey 6-1, 6-1 in their second-round encounter.

The other head-to-heads are between third seed Samprit Sharma of India and sixth seed Bora Bakici of Turkey, Radu Cojocaru of Australia and Andres Pereiro Lopez of Spain, and fifth seed Josh Hinton of Great Britain and Vishnu Balachandar of the US.

Meanwhile, the boys’ and girls’ doubles semi-finalists have been determined.

Amongst the girls, Ariana and Adiya, fourth seeds, take on Simona and Emily Lederer of Austria, while Arina and Anastasia Myachina face off with Luisa and Pallavi Patel of India.

For the boys, top-seeded pairing Venkat and Dev will take on Turks Ozan Avanoglu and Mustafa, while third seeds Bora and Cagan Ege Tufecki play second-seeded Indians Samprit and Rushikesh Sonowane. Tournament action continues today at the BTF.

The tournament is the second of three straight ITF events being hosted by the Kingdom.
