Nuwaidrat through to Khalifa bin Salman Cup quarters

Nuwaidrat punched their tickets to the quarter-finals last night of this year’s Khalifa bin Salman Cup basketball tournament.

Nuwaidrat claimed their berth after defeating Sitra 97- 83 in the single-game play-off, held at Zain Basketball Arena in Um Al Hassam.

With the result, Nuwaidrat join the seven already-qualified sides in the round of eight, including Khalifa bin Salman Cup holders Manama, Muharraq, Al Ahli, Al Ettihad, Al Najma, Bahrain Club and Al Hala.

Nuwaidrat took a 26-17 lead at the end of the first quarter and never looked back, going up by as many as 23 points the rest of the way.

Sameen Swint and skipper Omran Yousif combined for 48 points for the winners.

Swint had a game-high 25 to go with 16 rebounds, while Yousif had 23, including a red-hot seven three-pointers.

Murtadha Salman added a fine double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Abbas Ebrahim dished out 10 assists for Nuwaidrat.

Abbas Fadhel Jasim had 21 points and 13 rebounds to pace Sitra, who were still playing without a foreign professional.

Ebrahim Murad chipped in with 17 while Ali Eid had 14 in the loss.
