Bahraini elite athlete and former world champion Rose Chelimo won yesterday the women’s event at the Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon. Rose completed the race distance in a total time of two hours 37 minutes and 18 seconds.
She crossed the tape nearly 20 seconds ahead of runner-up Beatrice Jelagat of Kenya who had a mark of 2:37:35, while Meseret Dinke of Ethiopia came away with the bronze medal in 2:37:49. The result earned 34-yearold Rose her first victory since 2018.
She was quoted as saying after the race: “I am very happy to be the winner. The weather was hot and it was humid but I tried my best. This is my first win since 2018 so I am very, very happy about it.” Rose was the 2017 women’s marathon world champion and also won women’s marathon silver in the 2019 worlds. Singapore was her third major marathon of this year.
The onetime Asian Games gold-medallist also competed in the NM Marathon Rotterdam in the Netherlands in April where she finished third, and then at the Budapest world championships in August did not complete her run. “I knew I would be back (at the top of the podium),” she said. “If you train hard, you will come back and be strong.” Rose was the lone Bahraini elite runner competing yesterday in Singapore.
