Byline hoists HH Shaikh Khalid Cup

Byline powered to an impressive victory yesterday as Al Adiyat Racing hoisted the His Highness Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup in the feature event at Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club (REHC) in Sakhir.
Three cups in honour of Supreme Council for Youth and Sports first deputy chairman, General Sports Authority president and Bahrain Olympic Committee chief HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa were on offer yesterday.
HH Shaikh Khalid was in attendance along with REHC High Committee chairman His Highness Shaikh Isa bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa and other high-ranking officials. Byline powered to the impressive victory, ridden by jockey Gerald Mosse.
The AM Smithtrained six-year-old gelding won the eight-furlong event to capture the lion’s share of the BD10,000 total prize. Mehmento finished as the runner-up for Al Afoo Racing, Mohammed Hasan and Soufiane Saadi, while The Covex Kid took third for Al Mohamediya Racing, Fawzi Nass and Jason Watson.
Ocean Star and Kuheilat Al Adiyat 1782 won the two other HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cups on yesterday’s eight-race card. Ocean Star lifted the coveted trophy in the seventh race, held over a six-furlong straight with a BD5,000 prize.
The five-year-old, owned by Al Afoo Racing and trained by Mohammed Hasan, was ridden by Soufiane Saadi, and won ahead of Edward Cornelius, competing for the Mohamediya-Nass-Watson triumvirate.
Buffer Zone finished third for Victorious, Fawzi Nass and Stephane Ladjadj. Kuheilat Al Adiyat 1782 lifted the HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup in race one, held over eight furlongs with a BD3,000 prize. Abdulrahim Jasim steered the seven-year-old victor to first place in the race, which was a WAHO event, competing for Victorious and trainer Yousif Taher.
Kuheilan Aafas 1708 and Tuwaisan 1762 made it a clean sweep of the top three places for the Victorious-Taher combination. Kuheilan Aafas 1708 was ridden by Husain Makki while Abdulla Al Hawaj was in the saddle for Tuwaisan 1762.
Meanwhile, Tawaareq lifted the National Day Cup (sponsored by the Ministry of Information). The five-year-old won the 12-furlong BD10,000 event for the Victorious-Fawzi NassStephane Ladjadj connection.
Zagato was the runner-up for Mohamediya, Fawzi Nass and Jason Watson, while Rayounpour was third for Al Adiyat, AM Smith and Gerald Mosse. Elsewhere yesterday, four cups in honour of HH Shaikh Khalid’s sons were up for the taking.
Portofino won the HH Shaikh Faisal bin Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup for Abdulla Fawzi Nass, Fawzi Nass and Husain Makki. Uptoyouordowntome claimed the HH Shaikh Abdulla bin Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup for M and E Racing, AM Smith and Andrew Elliott.
Hercules captured the HH Shaikh Nasser bin Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup for Abdulla Fawzi Nass, Fawzi Nass and Stephane Ladjadj; and Brave The Storm hoisted the HH Shaikh Salman bin Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa Cup for Aqeel Hassan Abdulrahim, Jaber Ramadhan and Szczepan Mazur.
