Al Ahli came away with a thrilling 3-2 (25-22, 20- 25, 27-25, 22-25, 17-15) victory over Muharraq last night in their opening second round game of the Top Six stage in the 2023/2024 Isa bin Rashid Bahrain Volleyball League. Ahli went ahead in the match twice but Muharraq fought back both times, sending the hotly contested affair into the fifth set tie-break.
A Mahmood Al Afia service error gifted Ahli the clinching point in the first set, and then a Majeed Mohammed spike wrapped up the second to level the proceedings.
Sayed Mohammed Al Abrar later hit a service ace to put Ahli back in front 2-1, but Ahli rallied in the fourth set and a double block on Nasser Anan by Ali Al Sairafi and Al Afia forged the 2-2 deadlock.
In the decider, Ahli took a 5-2 lead but Muharraq tied it up with three straight points.
Things remained close but Ahli were able to seal the final result with a Hani Ali block on Al Sairafi. Others to play key roles for the victors were Ali Ebrahim, Mohammed Habib, Mahmoud Abdulhussain and Hassan Shakhouri, as they claimed their fifth win in six games in the Top Six.
Muharraq, who also relied on Majeed Mohammed, Sayed Ali Mohammed, Hussain Ehsan, and Ahmed Issa, suffered their third loss in their six outings but remained in contention for a Golden Square semi-final spot.
